Jazz up your Friday Night

the village underground

Lets play with word association. When I hear “The Village”, I think cool, cultural, artistic, communal. To me, the word underground describes something unknown, exceptional, original, independent.

The Village Underground is a dance club/lounge that encompasses all of the above. It is located in Greenwich Village, a neighborhood that the Beat Generation filled with music, art, and theater in the 1950s. The Beats, a collection of writers, poets, artists, and students, moved to Greenwich Village to flee from oppressive social conformity, where they listened to underground music, went to “off-off-broadway” shows, and would partake in anything that was not mainstream.
The Village Underground is anything but mainstream. If you are looking to pump your fist in a fancy club in your stilettos listening to Avicii, this is not the place for you. Don’t get me wrong, I love a sweaty dance club, waving my hands in the air in my mini skirt to some good house music, but that is typically not what is on my agenda for a Friday night.  I’d rather end the week in the basement of what was once the legendary “Gerdes’ Folk City,” where Bob Dylan and Simon and Garfunkel were regular performers. I’d rather push to the front of the stage, where my eyes are glued to the most talented, eccentric, enthused, life-lovin’ performers, screaming “weeeeee are the CHAMPIONS my fra-haaands.” (See video below). The Village Underground Band will keep you grooving to the exact tunes you want to hear all night long, from jazz, to vintage rock, to R&B, funk, reggae or even country music.

Transition Time

It can be tricky to choose the perfect outfit during this transitional time of year. Especially this year when one day you’re sporting a leather jacket and Ray Bans and the next you’re knee deep in snow. The key is to mix weights and textures and always accent your outfit with pops of spring.

Image
An oversized sweater is my favorite way to stay comfortably chic. Neutral oversized sweaters are a staple in your wardrobe but buying one with a bold print is a fun way to introduce spring colors to your outfit.

Not only are maxi dresses on trend for spring and summer, they are an easy outfit to dress up or play down. To get cozy on the colder days, throw your favorite oversized sweater over the dress and for the warmer days make the dress pop with a chunky neon necklace.

Booties are the perfect transition from snow boots to sandals. I currently love all booties with chunky heels that give you a great semi-casual look.

There’s something about sunglasses that make the weather feel warmer the instant you put them on. Good sunglasses are season less so invest in a great pair, like these from Warby Parker, and you’ll have them for years!

This is the time of year you can get away with wearing your fur vest one last time or stepping out in your new nude flats. As the weather fluctuates, have fun mixing and matching styles!

Prime Time

This. Shit. Saves. Lives. If you’re into lipstick (and hello, why wouldn’t you be??) and you don’t preface your application with a primer, I can bet that after about an hour, tops, you’re dealing with faded shades, crusty color, or the dreaded line around your lips that isn’t actually from a lip liner. I know, right? It’s so embarrassing. I don’t even…whatever. *Regina George voice* In the two minutes it takes for this colorless moisturizer to set, before applying God’s greatest gift to men/women/mankind (insert lipstick emoji here), you can put your Freakum Dress on and text back that scruffy musclehead who’s hitting you up for drinks. (Oh…is that just my type?) When you smack your lips together and they stick, time’s up! Liner & lipstick. #BOOM. You’ve just added a few more sultry, sexy hours to your night. Given that you’re not steady hitting on dudes, makin’ out, and shooting Fireball, that is. If you’re anything like us, you will be. So bring that shit with you. You’re welcome.

MAC Primer

PROCESS:

1) Apply primer (2 minutes to set).

2) Apply lip liner, fading color into lips.

3) Apply lipstick.

4) Be hot.

Don’t Get Hangry Get Hungry

irritable-when-hungry

You get home from work around 6:00 and if you are anything like me food must be in the very near future for fear that my hangry side comes out. I turn into those people in the snickers commercials “You aren’t you when you’re hungry.” This is a guide for you so that your roommates and loved ones never have to see that side of you.

Essentials in the fridge for quick dinners:

Chicken breasts: I always have chicken in the fridge and I am not a fan of frozen chicken so every week get a fresh package of chicken that is ready to be cooked the minute you walk in from work

Garlic: You can do a lot with some garlic and olive oil. Let’s be honest, aside from the smell, garlic is the best thing that’s happened to food.

Box of pasta: It doesn’t matter what types of pasta, always have some boxes in your cabinet…it’s fast it’s easy and it’s versatile.

Vegetables: Fresh vegetables are a must and the best way to get the right nutrients for a fast meal. Whether you boil, bake or microwave them, vegetables are easy. (cue the garlic–makes your veggies mouth watering)

Onions: These get their own reason why you need to have them in that fridge, because I can’t think of any meal that onions should not be a part of.

Eggs: No body said you cant have eggs for dinner and there are a lot of options if you always have a few eggs in the fridge.

Bread: Always have a loaf of bread waiting for you when you have those carb urges that you can’t control. Sandwiches are God’s gift to humans.

Here are some quick recipes and dinner ideas (some of these recipes have other ingredients that are not listed above but stop being lazy and go food shopping at the beginning of every week for fresh ingredients.)

Festival Season Is Around the Corner…

Image

Music festivals: one of our generation’s favorite escapades. The sun is shining and the bass is DEFINITELY bumpin’. Perhaps you’re headed to Miami for MMW in a few weeks or dreaming of jet setting to Belgium in July for TomorrowLand, like I am. Regardless, the idea of dedicating a weekend to music is something we can all hope to consider this upcoming season.

Music is the ever-changing beat in our daily lives. Are you into that Indie type shit? Forever committed to the Hip-Hop/R&B genre? Or are you that guy that still only listens to Avicii? Whatever your preference may be, there’s a music festival out there that I promise you’ll have the time of your fucking life at.

Ultra Music Festival

When/Where: March 28-30; Miami, FL

Who: Kaskade, Tiesto, Zedd, Afrojack, David Guetta, Avicii (more to come)

This year they’re squeezing the festival into one weekend instead of spreading it out into two. I think this makes it WAY easier for people’s travel plans plus it makes the lineup even more epic. This festival is perfect for your EDM lovers. For the people that want to wear the tutus and furry boots. The music will be insane and Miami is Miami- it will be to DIE for that entire week with all those DJs around. There will be many cool pool parties to attend and the clubs will be packed after the festivals wrap up for the night.

Coachella

When/Where: April 11-13, April 18-20; Indio, CA

Who: Outkast (!!!), Arcade Fire, Disclosure, Lana del Rey, Calvin Harris, Alesso, Ellie Goulding, Martin Garrix, Lorde, Skrillex, Pharrell Williams…

And that lineup is just to name a few. Although I do wish they had RHCP on there like last year, it’s still pretty kick ass this year and if you can get yourself out to the middle of the desert in hot, sunny Cali then why wouldn’t you!?! Outkast reuniting is a pretty big thing and I think that’s something that people are going to go nuts for. Here at this festival, we got everything from our Indie Rock to Dance to Hip-Hop. Every genre is represented and that’s what I love about it. You will come across the most eclectic mix of people at this festival. My one tip: from what I’ve heard, it’s literally the hottest experience of your life. Temperature wise. Have that H20 on deck.

Electric Daisy Carnival

When/Where: May 24-25 (NYC) on the road to June 20-22 (Las Vegas)

Who: Afrojack, Bassnectar, Calvin Harris, Loco Dice, Nero, Quintino, Steve Angello, R3HAB

This year EDC NYC is at Metlife Stadium again! I truly believe the venue of the event changes up the entire feel! Last year it was held at Citi Field- Metlife was so much better two years back. The space is just much more open and the flow felt way better. New York’s event, taking place on Memorial Day Weekend this year, is just a little pre game for the big party in Vegas, where Electric Daisy Carnival originated. Once again, this festival is definitely targeted towards the EDM lovers, but nonetheless a great time.  Plan your sets, times, and stages accordingly!!

Governor’s Ball

When/Where: June 6-8; Randall’s Island NYC

Who: Outkast, Vampire Weekend, Phoenix, J. Cole, The Strokes, Skrillex, Disclosure, Chance the Rapper

Last year Governor’s Ball was a little bit of a disaster as it took place during a crazy tropical storm. The lineup this year is ideal in my opinion. We don’t have too much of one certain genre. And well, I’ve been dying to see J. Cole for years now.  The creators have made official Governor’s Ball playlists on both Spotify and Rdio- make sure to check those out if you plan on attending! Pray for better weather this time around, too…

Attend this one, that one, or all of them (I wish). You’re guaranteed a fantastic weekend. It’s always, always better to spend your money for experiences than for things. It’ll make you appreciate shit more. I promise. Enjoying good music with good people is probably one of my favorite feelings. Forget saving up for the designer bag and book a festival- you won’t regret it.
